On May 19th, Mountain View High School Key Club Members of the Georgia District took a meaningful step toward ending book deserts by participating in a heartwarming literacy event at Buford Head Start in Gwinnett County. I had the honor of representing Mountain View High School as the Division 6 Lieutenant Governor alongside fellow club members in this impactful initiative.

In partnership with The LiTEArary Society, a nationally recognized, youth-led nonprofit dedicated to ending book deserts, and under our Immediate Past Governor’s Project, this event marked the official kickoff of the project in Gwinnett County. After we read to every preschooler at Buford Head Start, every single one had the chance to take their own book home, with help from the LiTEArary Society donating Pete The Cat books.

This event held extra meaning as it coincided with the 60th birthday of the Head Start program, originally established in 1965 as part of President Johnson’s War on Poverty. Today, it continues to serve children living below the poverty line by offering early childhood education and resources to help them thrive.

Our Key Club members didn’t just hand out books, we read with the children, laughed, and made memories that will last a lifetime. As we flipped through the pages of Pete The Cat, we saw firsthand the joy that reading can bring and the lasting impact a single book can make.

A big thank you to Rania Zuri, the Founder and CEO of the organization, who helped make this event happen alongside our Georgia District Members. This is just the beginning of our mission. Together, we are truly igniting literacy across Georgia.
