Powering Peer Learning

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many students were left struggling with virtual learning. Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, introduced a project based on his thoughts of how students thrived, succeeded, and supported each other.

In the four years since the idea was brought to attention, Schoolhouse has transformed into a flourishing nonprofit that offers free, live peer-to-peer tutoring.

With this being said, the Georgia District Key Club is thrilled to announce that Schoolhouse is the month of August’s nonprofit!

This nonprofit is run entirely by devoted student volunteers. Schoolhouse fosters peer engagement through structured small-group tutorials and individualized collaborative knowledge-building. Instead of teachers, Schoolhouse uses student learners with other students who have already surpassed the subject!

For example, studying for the SAT alongside another student who scored over a 700 on the test. With a global reach of 180 countries, Schoolhouse has delivered over 506,000 tutoring sessions to more than 205,000 learners.

“Give students the right platform and support, and they create something that’s both educational and deeply human,” said Khan. As technology shapes how knowledge is delivered, this nonprofit provides an influential reminder that inspiration and the community remain at the true face of education.
